Metro reports, Union J star Jaymi Hensley says coming out as gay on The X Factor was a doddle compared to when former winner Joe McElderry decided to go public.
‘The difference with Joe is that his family didn’t know, when all the rumours were going around. He was coming out all at once,’ said the 23-year-old, whose group performed at LGBT festival As One In The Park at the weekend.
‘I’ve been out for nine years now. Whereas I think he was a young kid, he was 18 or 19, if he hadn’t accepted that, or been out already, to do it publically… It was a really different ball game that I was in.
The singer says he’s happy to play his part in a breakout year for public gay figures and the gay community following the rows over gay marriage.
He told Attitude magazine: ‘I’ve been out since I was 14. It was a massive year for openly gay people; there was myself, Rylan, Lucy and Jade, so I didn’t feel, at the beginning, I needed to speak about it because there were other people.’
Changing his mind, the Carry You singer said: ‘I thought it was important for kids to know I have made nine weeks on X Factor without having to speak about it, but when I do, it’s going to make absolutely no difference whatsoever.’
